According to police crime statistics, 265,942 people were affected by domestic abuse in 2024. 70 percent of those affected were female – that is, 187,128 women and girls experienced violence or abuse. However, the actual numbers are likely to be significantly higher: Up to 95 percent of all incidents are never reported.

With this awareness campaign, the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV) is therefore sending a clear message: Domestic abuse is not a private matter or an individual problem – it is a responsibility for society as a whole.

Comprehensive protection against abuse– particularly the protection of women – is a key priority for Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig. With the reform of the Protection Against Violence Act and other measures, we are making this priority an integral part of our overall strategy. The campaign Your Courage Support aims to encourage people affected to seek help by providing information about their rights, legal procedures and available support services. At the same time, this campaign is intended to address everyone in Germany. Because: Silence perpetuates abuse. Recognising the signs saves lives.
